We’ve all had a Band-Aid® we don’t want to take off. We know removing it is going to hurt so we ignore it. But the best way to remove it is just to rip it off! It hurts for a second, then it’s done.
When it comes to tackling tough topics with teenage guys, it’s often best just to rip off the Band-Aid®. This means being willing to talk about potentially awkward topics like God’s design for sexuality and gender. It also means not being afraid to embrace being vulnerable. In a recent study, researchers found that 82% of Gen Z want adults to engage them in conversations about mental health, identity, and justice in faith settings.
What does this mean and how does it look?
- Teen guys have a strong sensor for inauthenticity. They can tell when someone is being disingenuous with them. So, it’s best to be honest and clear. This doesn’t mean oversharing, but it does mean looking them in the eye and being sincere.
- There are a lot of tough issues they face. They need to know what God’s Word says and how it applies to their lives. Avoiding talking about tough topics doesn’t help them in any way.
It’s not easy and it might hurt for a second but helping teen guys build a biblical worldview around sensitive issues they face will benefit them now and for a lifetime.
